Program Manager – Park People – Toronto, Ontario

Park People is an independent charity that builds stronger communities by animating and improving parks, placing them at the heart of life in the city. Created in 2011, we are a dynamic, growing organization that is at the forefront of a city park renaissance in Toronto. We focus on facilitating neighbourhood engagement in local parks, providing resources and information for best practices for our parks, building a network of local community park groups, bringing public attention to issues affecting our parks and highlighting the importance of good parks to the social, health, environmental and economic well-being of all residents of Toronto.

Position Overview

In this new role, you will lead Park People’s public programs through the next exciting phase of growth, working with new partners to deliver new and expanded programs. As a team leader you will supervise and coach a small team delivering programs on the ground and behind the scenes you will be responsible for broadening the programming funding base to ensure that our core work as well as new projects are sustainable over time. The position reports to the Director of Operations and is based out of our office. Key Areas of responsibility

Program Management and Planning:

Lead the strategic program and partnership development for Park People’s public facing programs
Participation and decision-making in short term and long term program priorities, goals and strategies
Participation in annual planning and budgeting process
Accountable for overall management of current programs and projects
Oversees narrative and financial donor reporting processes to ensure timely and quality reporting
Ensures program monitoring, evaluation and learning
Oversees quarterly and annual budget reviews, with a focus on budget vs. actual
Creates community based programming which serves the diversity of Toronto’s parks and neighbourhoods
Creates and stewards relationships program partnerships

Ensuring programs are well funded through:

Program development, grant writing and reporting
Working with partner organizations to submit collaborative proposals
Maintaining positive relationships with funders
Building the teams program partnership and fee for service portfolio

Team leadership:

Completes all performance management activities for direct reports including performance planning, monitoring, and regular performance appraisals
Interviews and selects staff and orients, trains, and coaches direct reports (and other staff) as required
Recommends or initiates HR changes for direct reports such as merit increases and other salary adjustments, promotions, transfers, terminations, performance improvement plans
Ensures Health and Safety protocols and effective systems are in place for program team
Periodically reviews work processes within operations to identify role redundancy, inefficiencies, unclear accountabilities, etc. and addresses issues with new work processes, design and role clarity

The Ideal Candidate will have the following:

Analytical and written skills, highlighted by the writing of reports and briefs
Understanding of budgeting, forecasting, and analysis of budget vs. actual expenditure
Leading the development and overseeing the implementation and review of operational plans
Ability to provide oversight and leadership to cross-organizational initiatives
Skill in supporting and coaching staff
Knowledge of Toronto’s Neighbourhood Improvement Areas and key community service organizations in under resourced areas of the city
Ability to identify potential partners and strengthening existing relationships
A high degree of self-awareness and personal maturity; open to continuous self-improvement; manages well during times of ambiguity
Willingness to initiate difficult conversations and deal with complex issues with staff and partners as they arise
Ability to make complex decisions in a timely fashion seeking team input using data and creative problem solving approaches
Effective at delegating and enabling an efficient team through close knowledge of the skills and abilities, ambitions and goals of team members

Salary Range: $50,000-$60,000
Anticipated start date: January 2016
