Recycling Assistant Summer Position – MMBC – Vancouver, British Columbia

Term: Summer May 15 to September 01, 2015

If you are interested in recycling operations and have related experience, the MMBC operations team is looking for a Summer Student to help us with the oversight of daily operations at recycling depot transfer facilities, as well as public outreach regarding our program.

Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) is a not-for-profit organization formed to develop and implement a residential stewardship plan for packaging and printed paper. MMBC is a member company of Canadian Stewardship Services Alliance (CSSA).

CSSA is a national, non-profit organization, founded by leading retailers and manufacturers, bringing together key players to achieve better recycling performance. CSSA is industry-led and industry-funded, working on behalf of Canadian businesses that participate in stewardship programs, as well as partnering with provincial stewardship organizations, provincial governments, local governments and waste management companies to provide recycling and waste management services, and leading expertise to nearly 20 million Canadians.

Reporting to the Manager, Field Services at Multi-Material BC, in providing oversight at a residential recycling transfer station as part of a multi-channel province-wide collection and post-collection network for waste packaging and printed paper (PPP).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist in providing oversight in the daily collection and transfer of residential paper and packaging at drop-off depots and transfer stations. This includes interacting with operations staff and the public.
Evaluate and monitor residential material flow and assist in preventing contamination as well as ensuring only residential materials are dropped off. Ensuring proper worksite standards are maintained.
Assist in determining accurate household count in the district by confirming address lists with actual house addresses.
Provide in-field training for service providers on established policies and practices.

DESIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Education related to environmental studies, or sustainability.
Experience in operational optimization, waste management, logistics contracting or related roles is beneficial but not necessary.
Direct experience in paper & packaging recycling or related field is beneficial but not necessary
Knowledge of waste management, materials management, commodity markets, and logistics or related operational business activities is beneficial but not necessary
Valid driver’s license is mandatory and access to a vehicle is required.
