Summer Student, Logistics and Equipment Assistant – Not Far From The Tree – Toronto, Ontario

30 hours per week for 8 weeks

Not Far From The Tree, a project of Tides Canada Initiatives Society, puts Toronto’s abundance of local fruit to good use by picking and sharing the bounty. Not Far From The Tree builds community, fosters environmental sustainability and enables equitable access to an existing supply of healthy, local food.

Position Summary: Working closely with the program team, the Logistics and Equipment Assistant will provide logistical support to our fruit picking program and events, ensure equipment needs are met and support Not Far From The Tree’s volunteer team.

Term: May 25thto July 17th, 2015

Location: 601 Christie Street West, Toronto, ON

Salary: $11/hour

Responsibilities:

Work closely with program team to maximize the amount of fruit picked
Lead teams of volunteers on fruit picks and transport fruit and equipment to food banks and community kitchens
Assist with maintenance, distribution and procurement of equipment
Some database and email account management
Support staff in the preparation and running of special events

Requirements:

This position is made possible with support from Canada Summer Jobs and only applicants who meet all of the following criteria will be considered:

between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act3; and,
legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Qualifications:

Comfortable riding a bicycle and able to lift 30 pounds or more
Enjoy working outdoors
Able to work independently and to problem solve
Interest in environmental sustainability, food security and/or community building
Experience working with volunteers or in customer service an asset
Computer skills an asset
