Program Officer

Canadian Roots Exchange (CRE) works to bring together groups of Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to engage in dialogue, breaking down walls and stereotypes that divide communities. CRE programming is led by youth, for youth in partnership with cultural and community resources and support from adult allies. CRE organizes four main types of activities: youth exchange programs, workshops, conferences, and inter-generational community events. Programs lead to a greater understanding of Indigenous realities and build stronger connections between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth.

Job Description:

Canadian Roots Exchange is looking for an individual of Aboriginal Ancestry (Status, Non-Status, Inuit or Métis) who is energetic, well organized and enthusiastic about what we do. A successful applicant will be involved with supporting and helping to implement and Canadian Roots Exchange programming. This includes youth exchange programs, supporting community based programming in the GTA and supporting teams of youth volunteers in various communities across Canada from the CRE office based in Toronto. The candidate will work out of our Toronto office and work closely with other office staff. This position encompasses many different duties and we are hoping to recruit a flexible and versatile candidate.

Duties will include:

Promoting the organization and our programs and soliciting new partnerships and sponsorships
Writing grants and preparing proposals for funders
Soliciting funding from businesses and organizations for programs and organization
Recruiting, training and supporting teams of youth volunteers from a distance
Facilitating educational and training sessions targeting youth alongside CRE staff and volunteers
Assisting with program evaluation and gathering feedback from multiple stakeholders
Developing new programs in collaboration with community partners and youth
Promoting CRE programs to youth organizations, businesses and post-secondary institutions
Maintaining and updating website and social media

Candidates should have:

A minimum of 2 years experience working with and/or living in First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities/organizations
A minimum of 2 years work experience in the not-for-profit sector in a programming capacity
A minimum of 2 years of direct experience working with youth is preferable
Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills
A drivers license without any driving restrictions
Computer literacy – strong capacity for MS Word, Excel, and Google Docs
The ability to manage a diverse workload, prioritize tasks and work both independently and collaboratively
Conversational ability of Indigenous languages and/or French is considered an asset
A sense of humour and positive attitude
A willingness to work evenings/weekends on occasion for special events

Other requirements

We are looking for candidates who self-identify from First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities.
Due to funding, all candidates selected for an interview will be required to register as a client (or have already registered) with Miziwe Biik Aboriginal Employment and Training Centre.
Only candidates who will be residing in the Greater Toronto Area are eligible for this position.
As a condition of hiring, the successful candidate will be required to submit a vulnerable sector criminal record check.

Salary and Start Date

We hope that the successful candidate will commence in mid-April. This is a full-time contract ending March 31, 2016. The successful candidate will receive $20.00/ hour for a 35 hour work week.
