Director – Environmental Education Ontario (EEON) – Toronto, Ontario

About the Organization: Founded in 2000, EEON came into being in order to raise the profile and increase the effectiveness of environmental education in Ontario. Through work with diverse groups across the province, we developed a strategic plan for achieving this goal in various settings: in our schools, communities, businesses, and homes. Our advocacy work has supported advancements in Ontario curriculum and Ministry of Education policy, but we know there’s still a lot of work to be done. We are currently working toward a comprehensive “environmental education report card” that assesses the strengths and gaps in environmental education across the province. As a small, nimble, and entirely volunteer charity, we are continuously working on building capacity and increasing our profile.

Our Vision

An Ontario where every individual adopts behaviours that reflect a commitment to a healthy, sustainable environment for future generations

Our Mission

To help achieve our vision, EEON will:

Identify the state of environmental education in Ontario
Work with relevant partners to ensure that people in all sectors have access to environmental education that is rich, meaningful and relevant to their needs

About the Position:

EEON is currently looking to fill 3 – 4 positions on our Board of Directors. With no permanent staff, we are a working board; this means all Directors support EEON and its objectives in various ways (from creating communications to project management, from website updating to event planning), while also managing governance and strategic planning. So, being a self-starter and being motivated to support EEON’s mission are the most important requirements for this role.

Qualifications: No previous Board experience is necessary, but would be an asset. A breadth of qualifications will be considered; however, EEON is specifically looking to build capacity in the following areas:

Polling and/or Market Research: experience in these areas generally would be an asset
Fundraising/Membership Development: experience with fundraising strategy, membership engagement, or strategic partnerships
Communications: experience in online marketing and communications.
Accounting: someone with bookkeeping and/or accounting experience

Responsibilities: Directors assume special responsibilities as defined by EEON’s by-laws and the laws governing non-profit corporations in Ontario. Directors are expected to act in the interests of EEON and to support its objectives. Each director is also expected to make recommendations (on governance, programming, communications, etc.) based on his or her experience. Specific responsibilities include:

Regularly prepare for and participate in Board meetings and special events
Lead or support Board activities on the various EEON committees (e.g., resource development, communications, programming, nominations and governance), per interest and ability
Help to communicate and promote EEON’s mission and programs to the community
Participate in EEON fundraising activities
Ensure succession planning for the Board of Directors

Meetings and Time Commitment: The Board of Directors meets, on average, every other month, or 6-8 times per year. Directors are asked to devote an average of 5-10 hours per month to EEON business above and beyond board meetings. To support special events and projects, this may occasionally increase up to 10-15 hours per month.

Length of Term: 2 years (This can be renewed for an additional term, pending approval by a majority of members at an Annual General Meeting.)

To Apply:

If you are interested in applying for this position, please e-mail:
