Regional Fire Training Officer – Regional District of Fraser Valley – Chilliwack, BC

The Fraser Valley Regional District, headquartered in Chilliwack, B.C., is comprised of six member municipalities and eight Electoral Areas, each containing numerous unique communities, cultures and landscapes.  The FVRD covers roughly 13,900 square kilometers, and delivers over 100 separate services to over 275,000 residents in the beautiful Fraser Valley.

We are inviting applications from qualified candidates to fill the position of Regional Fire Training Officer.  Reporting to the Manager of Electoral Area Emergency Services, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing support to the Training Officers and training programs for the Fraser Valley Regional District Volunteer Fire Departments.  Duties include coaching, assisting and mentoring of Volunteer Fire Department Training Officers; assessment of the current status of volunteer firefighter skill sets; assessment, review and development of Fire Department training programs that are in compliance with the B.C. Office of the Fire Commissioner Training Playbook and fire protection service levels as established by the FVRD Board of Directors; review of existing standard operating guidelines that relate to training; assisting with the development, review and maintenance of firefighting training records and records management systems; and the review of existing Fire Department training budgets.  The term of this position is from February 2016 to approximately February 2017.  The working hours for this position will be varied and it is expected the incumbent will work a combination of days, evenings and weekends as required.

The ideal candidate will possess:

Certification to NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 2; plus certification to Fire Service Instructor Level 1;
Preferably experience as a Volunteer Firefighter and/or Volunteer Fire Department Training Officer;
Sound knowledge of modern fire suppression operations, principles, practices, techniques and procedures in a rural, volunteer setting;
Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, with an ability to deal effectively with Volunteer Fire Department Training Officers, Fire Chiefs, Members, and staff;
Strong project management and organizational skills;
Excellent computer skills, with a high level of proficiency with Microsoft Office;
Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment and effectively handle conflicting priorities;
A strong understanding of all legislation and regulatory regimes which are applicable to this position.
