The Fire Prevention Division of the City of Coquitlam’s Fire / Rescue team has an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated individual with a keen interest and passion for fire prevention and community relations to fill the position of Fire Prevention Inspector.  You will be responsible for the inspection of public and private buildings and the examination of plans to ensure compliance with applicable codes, bylaws and statutes, participate in the delivery of fire and life safety education programs and investigate fires to determine cause and origin.  As a highly organized communicator, you will prepare a variety of records, reports, correspondence and presentation materials related to the work. You deal effectively with owners, professionals and the public in general while exercising sound judgement and tactfulness when enforcing regulations, conducting presentations and performing investigations. In addition, you have the ability to work independently and assume responsibility for technical decisions.  A background in building construction or related trades would be an asset.

The ideal candidate will possess a post-secondary diploma in a related discipline, along with a Fire Prevention Officer Certificate (from JIBC) or equivalent and other courses relating to fire protection.  You have thorough technical knowledge of prevention practices and methods, building fire safety systems and fire protection equipment gained through related training and experience, such as in the trades or a related safety field. In addition, you have the ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and related material and have an understanding of by-laws, acts, codes and regulations as it relates to fire safety systems in buildings and facilities.

The work hours for this position may vary throughout the week based upon operational needs and will include evenings and weekends. A valid BC Driver License is required (Class 5).
