Director of Human Resources

The City of Nanaimo is seeking a new Director of Human Resources. Reporting to the General Manager of Corporate Services, the Director of Human Resources is a member of the City’s Senior Management Team and participates in the overall planning, administration and management of the City. Responsibilities include the provision of sound advice and guidance to City Council and Senior Managers, as well as strategic guidance in all matters relating to human resources and labour relations. The incumbent plans, organizes, coordinates and directs, through staff, all services and programs provided by the Human Resources Department including; labour relations, recruitment, compensation, training and development, employee relations, health and safety, disability management and benefits and leaves.

The incumbent must have considerable knowledge of collective bargaining and case law relating to labour and employee relations in addition to strong leadership skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with Council, CUPE and IAFF executive and staff at all levels and in all departments. Applicants should also have demonstrated problem solving abilities, excellent communication skills, and considerable project management abilities. Experience in a municipal organization at a senior level and advanced training in local government administration would be an asset. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline (e.g. Business Administration or Public Administration), 8 years of progressively responsible related experience, including significant experience in labour relations, and 4 years in a management supervisory role.  An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
