Bylaw Enforcement Officer – City of Merritt – Merritt, BC

Position:
The City of Merritt is inviting applications for the position of a permanent full time Bylaw Enforcement Officer.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Planning & Development Services Manager, the Bylaw Enforcement Officer is responsible for providing inspection and regulatory services while enforcing local and provincial statutes relating to the Municipality.

Salary:
The 2015 pay rate as per the CUPE Collective Agreement is $26.51 (Bylaw Services Officer I) – $28.09 (Bylaw Services Officer II) per hour plus a comprehensive benefit package.

Hours of Work:
This is a full time position with hours of work as outlined in the CUPE Local 900 Collective Agreement – a forty (40) hour work week with shifts rotating occasionally to include some weekends, early mornings and evenings.

Essential Qualifications:
The City’s Bylaw Enforcement Officer deals with complaints relating to dogs at large (which frequently involves capture and care of said animals), unsightly premises, parking issues, snow removal bylaws, noise complaints and other regulatory bylaws.  The City’s Bylaw Enforcement Officer responds to questions regarding activities permitted according to the City’s Zoning Bylaw, and issues Business Licenses.

Experience:
You are a team player who will investigate complaints from the public, issue Bylaw Enforcement Tickets, deliver summonses as required, gather evidence and appear in court as a witness, prepare reports, maintain records and other enforcement tasks.  The work involves constant and extensive public contact therefore requiring an individual with excellent customer service skills and sound judgment.

Specific Skills:
Preference will be given to individuals with previous bylaw or law enforcement experience with strong conflict resolution skills.  Other required skills include excellent verbal and written communication and computer literacy.
