2015 Project Coordinator – Vancouver Fruit Tree Project – Vancouver, British Columbia

The Vancouver Fruit Tree Project Society is a community-based registered charity dedicated to harvesting and sharing fresh local fruit in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since 1999 we have picked more than 48,000 pounds of fruit and redistributed it to community partners.

The Vancouver Fruit Tree Project Society seeks an enthusiastic, organized Coordinator for the 2015 season, the 16th year of the project.

The Coordinator position responsibilities include:

Organizing Frequent seasonal Fruit Picks:

Contacting and scheduling fruit picking volunteers, transportation logistics and community partners to receive the donated fruit for each fruit pick.
Keep detailed statistics and maintain our various databases.

Spearheading New & Ongoing Projects:

Lead the initiative on a new City-funded public fruit tree project, where we aim to engage targeted community centres to help harvest and share fruit from nearby public land.
Coordinate the Fruit Tree Pruning Social Enterprise with local tree owners and accredited arborists.
Supervising and delegating appropriate tasks to part-time intern.

Communications:

Building capacity and awareness of the Vancouver Fruit Tree Project by communicating with current stakeholders and the public though an email newsletter, print materials, in-person and via social media
Liaising with the Board of Directors and community partners throughout the season, including attending monthly meetings to give a project report
Helping organize a summer celebration event
Complete an end of season Annual Harvest Report, and contribute to funders’ reports

Outreach:

Create press releases, copy and blog content.
Respond to information requests and media inquiries
Recruit new Volunteers & Tree Owners
Attend community outreach events, as time allows
Coordinate and promote VFTP events, including Community tabling events, with support from VFTP volunteers & board members.
Assisting with grant writing and fundraising efforts, as required
Support the Board of Directors in other ongoing projects and duties

Our ideal candidate:

Is passionate about food security and community building
Has demonstrated experience recruiting and coordinating volunteers
Is organized and can work independently and is comfortable making decisions
Has strong written and verbal communication skills
Keen eye for detailed record keeping
Is professional and timely in both phone and electronic communication
Has fundraising and/or event organizing experience
Is comfortable with MS Office, MailChimp, WordPress, Document Sharing and graphic design.
Has access to own laptop and cell phone for the length of the contact Contractor will be responsible for their own telecommunications costs.
Valid Drivers License and First Aid Training are considered assets

This is a part time contract position, which will run from March 8 to November 8. Hours per week range between 8 up to 20 hours throughout the season. The schedule fluctuates depending on the readiness of the fruit, so flexibility is key. Some evening and weekend work will be required. The rate of compensation for this position is $18 per hour.
