Senior Planner – City of Nelson

The City of Nelson is currently seeking to fill a permanent full-time position of SENIOR PLANNER. This position is responsible for the ongoing development and implementation of land use planning projects, sustainability initiatives and policy work. The position is also responsible for a wide variety of land use applications including 60 to 80 development related applications a year. A thorough knowledge of related Acts and Regulations, planning processes, and best practices is necessary.

The position requires an individual with vision and ability to think strategically about the future direction and growth of our City. The ability to communicate effectively both with internal and external stakeholders is a must as well as the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships. This position will play a key role in the current and long range planning activities. As the Senior Planner you coordinate assigned activities with other City Departments, City Committees and outside public and private agencies, all the while fostering cooperative working relationships through community engagement.

As a Senior Planner, you will implement the City’s vision in the Official Community Plan through processing planning applications, undertaking community planning projects, supporting the Advisory Planning Commission, and working collaboratively with other team members in Development Services as well as other City Departments.

Primary responsibilities include:
Lead community planning projects including the development and implementation of public engagement strategies that are comprehensive, transparent and inclusive
Review and evaluate files against current city policies and bylaws
Resolve planning issues by working closely with Council and community members
Present and recommend decisions to Council and the Advisory Planning Commission on land use applications and community planning projects
Conduct site investigations on properties to determine context of applications and determine the impacts of approving an application
Work collaboratively as a team member within Development Services as well as other City Departments

Qualifications:
Degree in Planning that is recognized by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and a minimum of four years of relevant planning experience. A degree in a planning related discipline will also be considered. A Master’s Degree in Planning or a related field is desirable.
Thorough knowledge of British Columbia planning legislation
Experience working in an urban environment, and experience presenting to Council will be considered assets
Strong communication and customer service skills, and ability to build beneficial relationships and facilitate conflict resolution
