The Director, Human Resources plays a critical role in supporting our most valuable resource – our people. Birds Canada has over 70 employees, growing to over 100 during the busy field season. The Director, Human Resources leads in the development and implementation of the organization’s HR policies and processes. A trusted and dependable team player and a member of the Birds Canada Management Team, the Director, Human Resources thrives in a dynamic environment with a mix of short-term imperatives and long-term initiatives. The ideal candidate is confident, trustworthy, and empathic. This position currently reports to directly to the President and CEO.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop, review, and implement a suite of organization-wide HR policies, ensuring engagement, buy-in, and training of staff and volunteers where required.
Assess, streamline, and improve HR processes and software. In the short term, oversee the implementation of BambooHR HR Management Software, including back-end setup and employee training.
Monitor and improve employee satisfaction and wellbeing, ensuring a positive workplace culture. Develop and implement initiatives to recognize employee success, milestones, etc. Participate in the employee-driven Wellness Committee.
Ensure that staff are receiving timely and high-quality professional development and training opportunities.
Ensure the organization’s compliance on all HR-related policies and procedures, acting as the lead HR expert on the organization’s Compliance and Health & Safety committees.
Ensure that compensation at Birds Canada remains competitive and equitable. In the short term, oversee an ongoing Compensation Framework review, working with external consultants, senior leadership, and the Board.
Ensure that the cycle of work planning and performance reviews is effective in helping our team members grow and remain focused on our strategic objectives.
Act as the key resource in handling sensitive staff grievances or personal matters impacting workplace wellbeing.
Oversee the implementation of our Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion policy as it relates to the organisation’s staffing, and participate in the organization’s EDI Committee.
Ensure that proper employee records are kept and their confidentiality protected.
Develop and regularly update an onboarding journey for new hires.
Serve as a backup for payroll.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
University degree and related experience. An HRPA designation would be an asset.
Demonstrated experience in developing and leading the implementation of HR policies and procedures
Prior experience administering HR software, in particular BambooHR, would be an asset.
Solid knowledge of employment legislation and HR best practices
Great judgement, with the ability to problem-solve, proactively anticipate problems and propose solutions, and work under minimal supervision
Empathic and caring, with the ability to confidentially and respectfully handle sensitive HR issues
Prior experience and/or knowledge of the non-profit / charitable sector would be an asset.
Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively in both official languages would be an asset.
