Ecological Monitoring Intern – rare Charitable Research Reserve

This is a paid position, in part under Colleges and Institutes Canada (CICan) Career-Launcher- Natural Resources Internships Program (pending). Requirements include:
Post-secondary graduate
No more than 30 years of age at the start of the internship
Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person granted refugee status in Canada
Legally allowed to work according to the relevant provincial and Canadian legislation and regulations
Not receiving employment insurance during their internship

A university degree or college diploma in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or related field;
Experience conducting independent scientific research and monitoring studies;
Previous fieldwork experience in biology, physical geography, environmental studies, or a related discipline;
Experience using keys for species identification and familiarity and comfort using field guides;
Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle;
Strong southern Ontario flora and fauna identification skills (with particular emphasis on butterflies an asset);
Ontario Benthos Biomonitoring Network (OBBN) experience and certification would be an asset.

Participate in species monitoring using standardized protocols, possibly including but not limited to: butterflies, birds, invasive species, salamanders, and soil humus decay rates;
Collect and analyse data and prepare summary documents, reports, and public communication pieces for review;
Recruit and manage volunteers and community-based scientists to assist with monitoring programs;
Assist with other rare events as required including some education and community programs;
Attend regular staff meetings to report on progress and preliminary findings
SALARY: $16.35/hr, 35 hours a week. The position is for 7 months, with the possibility of extension, beginning May, 2021 and pending approval of funding.
