This is a one-year full-time position (35 hours per week) with the possibility of extension subject to funding availability.
The Salmon Value Lead is expected to function as a key NC CE Project Team member, as well as the lead of the Salmon Technical Sub-group to develop and implement workplans in order to achieve the deliverables under the program. Given the alignment of tasks outlined under the Salmon Value workplan with the key activities leading to the development of a Skeena Estuary Habitat Management and Protection Plan (SEHMPP), it is envisioned that the Salmon Value Lead will work in close collaboration with the project team leads for the Estuary Value.
Anticipated responsibilities include:
Design and lead the activities for the Salmon Value related tasks (Please reach out to the email below for further information).
Lead, supervise, and provide oversight to technical support staff/sub-contractors in order to generate deliverables.
Participate in Project Team, Salmon Technical Sub-Group, Estuary Technical Sub-Group, Tier 1 (Nation only), and Tier 2 (including Province and/or Federal governments) meetings as required.
Lead work-planning initiatives in conjunction with the Project Management team and assign tasks to Technical Working Group Support Team members accordingly.
Provide updates and project summaries to the Project Partners as required.
Liaise with technical staff from related initiatives, e.g. MaPP and ESI, to carry out commonly defined goals as directed by the Project Team.
Support internal and external communications and engagement, including supporting presentations more broadly to internal/external groups.
Support sub-contractor(s) to lead/facilitation workshops/working discussions with project partners including Provincial and Federal government agencies and First Nations;
Collaborate closely with the Estuary and Access to Resources/Food Security Value Leads to plan and implement tasks required under the Workplan.
Identify and work with Project Managers and the Project Team to develop and manage contracts to fill capacity gaps as appropriate.
Conduct other related tasks, as requested, by the Project Managers.
Experience and Skills Required:
At least five years of experience working as a fisheries/fish habitat biologist
Registered Professional Biologist designation is beneficial.
Demonstrated knowledge of the legislation, management regimes and processes associated with salmon management in the Province of BC.
Exceptional time-management and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and products with tight timelines.
Excellent technical and communications skills and experience developing technical/management briefings, reports, and other communications products.
Skills and experience in organizing multi-party workshops.
Working closely with teams to develop workplans, statements of work, and request for proposals, and experience in proposal evaluation and management of contractors/sub-consultants.
Familiarity with technologies/software such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Doodle Poll, online conferencing platforms such as GoTo Meeting, and experience with GIS and R-code is an advantage.
Ability to work independently and be self-directed.
Experience managing and working effectively as part of a team.
Experience working with First Nations on collaborative initiatives is a definite asset.
Experience with First Nation focused fishery management, or a solid understanding of First Nations resource management is desirable. Familiarity and experience working on the BC North Coast, and with the North Coast First Nations, is of additional benefit.
Must have access to a vehicle and a valid class 5 driver’s license as some travel may be required.
A combination of related skills and experience may be considered in lieu:
Master’s Degree in Fisheries Biology, Marine Planning, or related field.
Degree/certificates in community development, communication, and/or project management is an asset.
Local applicants from the North Coast Region are preferred. This role may be performed remotely, however the successful applicant will need excellent computing skills, telephone and internet access, and the ability to travel.
