The Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) is a nationally incorporated charity with chapters in 13 cities across Canada. We are currently seeking an Administrative Assistant to join our team at the MAC Islamic School.

Learning Resource Teacher

Reports to:                 Academic Administrator

Position Status:          Full-time

General Description:

A Resource Teacher has thorough knowledge, uses a variety of teaching techniques, establishes positive relationships with students, collaborates with colleagues, initiates professional development, supports the School mission, serves outside the classroom; adheres to professional standards and models integrity and respect.

Position Summary:  Under the general supervision and reporting directly to the Academic Administrator, the Resource Teacher is responsible for facilitating the learning of students with learning differences, which interfere with access or processing of the regular curriculum.  The Lead teacher works in collaboration with grade level teams in the development of differentiated curriculum, effective instructional methods, and individualized educational plans.  The Lead teacher will coordinate educational planning with grade level expectations to ensure academic integration of the school program.

Major responsibilities include teaching either individuals or small groups of pupils within, or outside the class; preparing lessons and resources; marking and assessing work; developing and adapting conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of pupils; using special equipment and facilities, such as audio-visual materials and computers to stimulate interest in learning; collaborating with the classroom teacher to define appropriate activities for the pupils in relation to the curriculum; assessing children who have long or short-term learning difficulties and working with colleagues to identify individual pupils’ special needs; liaising with other professionals, such as social workers, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and educational psychologists; working closely with parents and guardians; organizing learning outside the classroom in activities such as community visits, school outings or sporting events; administration, including updating and maintaining records of pupils’ progress; attending statutory annual reviews receiving in-service training; behavior management.

Essential Functions:

Services to Students:

Collaborate with Division 1 & 2 teams in curriculum development for individual students, small groups, and whole class instruction.

Teach small groups within or outside of the classroom as indicated by students’ need for appropriate instruction in Language Arts or Mathematics as determined by grade level team.

Provide analysis and updates to Year heads and the academic Administrator and report findings to parents.

Administer and/or analyses formal assessments that assist in the development of student’s learning profile and appropriate curriculum and instruction.  Write reports or summaries of reports of individual’s evaluations with effective recommendations.  Review with faculty, parents, and / or allied professionals the results, and assist in the development of appropriate educational plans and support.  Meet with individual student to discuss evaluation results and effective use of accommodations or strategies.

Services to Faculty and Learning Resource Department:

Actively participate in team meetings.  Consult and collaborate with classroom teachers and team members in developing and implementing teaching strategies for students with learning differences.  Attend parent conferences as needed.

Collaborate with teachers in the assessment of students for instruction and curricular placement and development. Participate in the admission process:  assess students; consult with members of the admission team.

Maintain a database:  keep all information current regarding educational plan (tutoring, testing, learning profiles, accommodations and strategies, recommendations made to parents).  Distribute information to all team members and facilitate understanding of student’s learning needs.

Meet regularly with Department Head and the Academic Administrator to share information on students of concern and discuss curriculum.  Meet with curricular coordinators, as requested to discuss language arts and math curriculum and monitor effectiveness.

Service to Families:

Provide ongoing case management of students identified with learning difference: Develop support program as indicated; act as liaison between classroom, parents, and allied professional(s); act as liaison to the office administrator, making recommendation for financial support as indicated by academic plan.

Assist families in planning summer programs for enrichment and /or intervention, providing recommendations and acting as liaison with community resources and allied professionals.

Attend meetings of Parent Group on Learning Differences.

Communicate results of screenings and tests to parents; maintain student cumulative files for department and school use.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Education, certification in Educational Therapy or the equivalent in a related field with emphasis in specific instruction or curriculum development relevant to the field of learning disabilities and a minimum 2 years supervised teaching experience and direct work in the field.

Knowledge of current principles, practices, techniques and objectives of instructional methods, including: differentiated instruction (i.e., modified curriculum), multisensory researched-based instruction; and understanding and application of assessment and educational planning successful for students with learning difficulties.

The candidate should have the ability to relate well to people; relate to the difficulties and concerns that parents, faculty, and the general school community experience related to academic and cognitive differences.  The candidate must maintain a high level of integrity with regard to matters, which may be considered confidential in nature and must be able to work collaboratively.

Working Conditions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly stands, walks, uses hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste or smell.  The employee is also required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

The employee must occasionally lift and /or move equipment up to twenty pounds.  The employee in this career should be able to use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired. The employee must be constantly alert for student safety.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  It is important for people in this career to speak clearly so listeners can understand, as well as to recognize and understand the speech of another person.  It is also necessary for the individual to be able to focus on one source of sound and ignore others.

The employee will occasionally work in outside and outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
