DUTIES:
Reporting to the Manager of Planning Services, the Building Inspector efficiently organizes and delivers building inspection services from initial enquiry and application through plan checking; issuing building and plumbing permits; conducting inspections to monitor compliance; and record keeping. The Building Inspector is also involved in researching and drafting policies and programs relating to sustainable building and other priorities; working with other departments on development and construction related enforcement activities; and providing professional and technical advice to customers inside and outside the organization.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

Level 1 Certificate – Building Officials Association of BC or working toward certification
Level 1 Certificate – Plumbing Officials Association of BC or working toward certification
Thorough knowledge of construction methods and materials, building and plumbing codes, bylaws, and regulations affecting the construction and repair of buildings
Organized, self-motivated, have excellent communication skills (written and oral), great problem solving and conflict resolution skills, and able to work with minimal supervision within a team environment
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS in addition to the above:

Two years of experience in a municipal setting, or equivalent
Level 2 Certificate – BOABC and/or POABC
Strong knowledge of sustainable building construction methods and materials
A trade certificate in carpentry or plumbing, a building technology diploma, or equivalent experience and training

Qualifications must be outlined with all verifications of education/certification attached.
