You will inspect various types of building construction as well as repairs/alterations and examine plans to ensure building code compliance.  This will involve providing technical information and assistance to property owners, engineers, architects and municipal staff  You will be relied on to read/interpret plans, recognize non-compliant construction and identify required changes.

The successful candidate will have thorough knowledge of construction practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in building construction, including by-laws, acts, codes, standards and regulations related to building construction.  Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and related material, recognize technical requirements and suggest changes and corrections as required. Deal effectively with owners, contractors, tradesmen, engineers, architects and others while exercising sound judgment and tactfulness when explaining and firmly enforcing regulations, by-laws and ordinances.  Ability to work independently and to assume responsibility for technical decisions and prepare and present evidence in court as required, reports and correspondence, and maintain records related to the work.

Your background includes considerable experience within building trades at a journeyman level and/or completion of a diploma in Building Technology from a recognized post-secondary institution coupled with considerable field experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  In addition, you have a Level 1 BOABC certification, knowledge of construction practices, materials, tools and equipment, an understanding of by-laws, acts, codes and regulations, the capacity to work independently and assume responsibility for technical decisions. A valid Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia is required.
