Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic – Resort Municipality of Whistler

The central services department of the infrastructure division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic. Reporting to the Garage Supervisor, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting in October 2017 through to September 30, 2018.

The Heavy Duty Mechanic’s role is to maintain and repair RMOW municipal vehicles including 5 tonne plow trucks, fire emergency response vehicles, vactor trucks, and heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, excavators and grader equipment. The Heavy Duty Mechanic will endeavor to minimize down time and ensure that vehicles and equipment are operating safely and in compliance with current Federal and Provincial regulations. This position will also be responsible to schedule repairs; complete work order flow and service records; and maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Qualified applicants will possess a grade 12 diploma and be a trade certified Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic (C of Q) supplemented by 3-5 years of experience in a similar role. Additional trade certifications such as Commercial Vehicle Technician and/or Metal Fabricator will be considered a strong asset. Candidates must be capable to diagnose, overhaul, repair and service heavy duty vehicles and equipment with minimum assistance; have extensive previous experience with a variety of tools, heavy duty vehicles and related equipment; and possess working knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office and work order systems. Candidates also must have sound knowledge of the principles and operations of various fueled combustion engines; considerable knowledge of the tools, methods and safety practices required for such work, including the Department of Transportation and Commercial Vehicle Safety Branch regulations. Additionally, candidates must possess the physical strength, stamina and coordination to permit the performance of continuous moderate to heavy work.

The successful candidate is customer service focused and demonstrates strong organizational and problem solving skills; the ability to work well independently and to positively contribute to a teamwork environment. As a requirement of the position, the successful candidate must hold a valid class 5 BC driver’s license (class 1 or 3 with air a strong asset) and must provide a satisfactory drivers abstract prior to beginning employment.

This position works 76.5 hours biweekly at a rate of $37.38 per hour. Employees in the Garage department shall normally work a schedule consisting of eight days of work in a fourteen day period; work schedule shall consist of seven work days at 9.5 hours exclusive of a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period and one work day at 10 hours exclusive of a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period.
