Treasurer, Board of Directors – High Park Nature Centre – Toronto, Ontario

We currently looking fill the Treasurer position on the Board of Directors, of the High Park Nature Centre.

A brief note about us:
The High Park Nature Centre is a non-profit organization that was established in 1999 and is celebrating 15 amazing years of outdoor environmental education and park stewardship! The High Park Nature Centre promotes awareness and respect for nature through outdoor environmental education and park stewardship. Nature Centre programs inspire a sense of wonder, knowledge and respect for High Park’s natural systems; restore human connections to local plants and animals; and engage children and families in ecological restoration activities to ensure a sustainable future for High Park for generations to come.

Treasurer

Treasurer is an officer of the organization, a member of the board of directors, and supervises the organization’s financial condition and reports on it to the board.

Treasurer specific duties include:

Ensures the books of account and accounting records of the organization are kept as required by law.
Prepares draft annual financial statements in accordance with Canadian accounting principles for not for profits.
Submits draft annual financial statements to an auditor (approved by members)
Submits audited annual financials to the board for review and approval.
Presents audited annual financial statements to members at the Annual General Meeting for approval.
Responsible for ensuring that an annual budget is prepared and submitted to the board for approval. Assists Executive Director in the preparation of the annual budget.
Prepares annual charity return and attachments and submits them to the Charities Directorate within the filing deadline of the return (currently six months after the year end).
Implementing a system of internal controls commensurate with the size of the organization.
Check deposits prepared by staff and deposit them at the bank
Funds and investments – ensures that the funds are retained in accounts that are with financial institutions and are insured by the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, within their limits of insurance Reviews and invests excess funds as determined from time to time.
Reviews/ Prepares bank reconciliation on a monthly basis.
Ensures bills are paid in a timely fashion.
Ensures cheque payments, online bill payments, direct deposits and pre-authorized withdrawals are recorded accounting system.
Works with the bookkeeper to prepare monthly forecasts for presentation to the Board.
Presents monthly financial statements to the board.
Reviews and/or prepares funding accountability reports for granting bodies.
Coaching and/or training staff on financial matters.
Respond and perform necessary research on items of a charitable nature related to accounting and tax issues for charities (for example, donation receipting requirements).

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

Education, experience and training in the management of financial matters with particular regard to experience in the ability to prepare, interpret and present financial statements for not for profit organizations. Knowledgeable of accounting and tax issues associated with charitable organizations. Certified Accountant an asset.

Education, experience, knowledge and skills in finance and financial matters
Adherence to minimum prescribed Board standards including attendance at monthly Board meetings
Attendance at Annual General Meeting
To foster a positive working relationship with other Board members, and the general staff
Be aware and abstain from any conflict of interest
Be a member in good standing of the organization

APPOINTMENT and TERM:

The Treasurer’s position on the Board is determined by a vote of the directors. The Treasurer commits to serve a two-year term.
