Conservation Coordinator, Ocean Program – Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS)

About you:
You are passionate about ocean conservation and have a good knowledge of marine protected areas (MPAs) and marine conservation issues in Canada and an eagerness to grow your expertise in these fields. Interdisciplinary by nature, you enjoy connecting science to policy. You are adaptable and thrive in a diverse role with varied responsibilities. You can respond quickly to emerging issues and like being challenged to learn new skills. You enjoy organizing both people and projects and are comfortable juggling multiple projects with competing priorities and tight deadlines. You have lots of initiative and are equally happy working independently or as part of a team. Above all, you are the type of person to roll up your sleeves and get stuff done.

Key responsibilities will include:
Supporting the development, implementation and monitoring of successful campaign plans and communications plans.
Providing coordination and support to the National Ocean Program and regional staff including preparing funding applications and reports, planning and facilitating research.
Conducting research and analyses and drafting reports, briefing notes, and communications for various audiences, including government, media and stakeholder groups.
Participating in government relations activities, workshops and consultations relating to ocean policies and issues.
Supporting CPAWS Ocean Program engagement in coalitions and collaborative projects. This may include planning meetings, booking venues, drafting agendas and taking notes
Supporting the planning of IMPAC5 including program development, event planning, and coordinating and supporting partner organizations.

You will have (required qualifications):
Detailed understanding of MPA science and policy, and marine conservation issues.
At least 3 years experience coordinating campaigns or projects in ocean conservation, environmental management, campaign management, or related field.
Sharp written and verbal communications skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Excellent logistical and organizational skills backed by sound judgment and decision-making.
Relevant educational experience, or equivalent training and/or experience (please describe how your education and/or experience is relevant to this role in your cover letter and resume)
Experience conducting and communicating research and analyses for non-specialist audiences.
An inclusive, collegial, and collaborative work ethic.
A commitment to Indigenous reconciliation and anti-racism.
You may have (the following would be beneficial but are not essential):
Non-profit experience, preferably with an ENGO or advocacy group.
Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and engaging decision makers and stakeholders from diverse sectors, backgrounds, and geographies.
Understanding of fisheries management and/or policy.
Experience producing maps for public communications and conducting spatial analyses using ArcGIS and associated tools including story maps.
Experience coordinating coalitions and collaborations.
Fluency in French.
