Operator 1 – City of Cranbrook

POSITION SUMMARY:
Perform the duties of an Operator 1; assist other members of the Utilities section of the Public Works department with surface and groundwater capture, treatment, and distribution system operation and maintenance, and operation and maintenance of wastewater collection and treatment facilities; operate a variety of mobile equipment common to a municipal Public Works department, and perform the duties of a Truck Driver/Labourer.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION: Grade 12 Diploma or GED
Approved Training for Confined Space Entry.

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years Municipal Works experiences; or work experience of a similar nature in private industry.

One (1) year direct hands on work experience with day-to-day involvement with maintenance and/or installation of water distribution systems.
LICENCES: Successful completion of approved water utility training equivalent to the California State University Office of Water Programs correspondence course relating to water distribution.

As a condition of obtaining the Operator 1 position, the successful applicant shall be capable of, commit to, and obtain a valid EOCP certification as a Level 1 Water Distribution Operator (WD-1) within 90 calendar days of award of the position.

As a condition of retaining the Operator 1 position, the Incumbent shall be willing, capable of, commit to, and obtain a valid EOCP certification as a Level 2 Water Distribution Operator (WD-2) within 6 calendar months of EOCP eligibility or within 30 calendar months of appointment to the Operator 1 position, whichever is the lesser time period.

Valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement.

SPECIFIC SKILLS:
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Demonstrated ability to exercise considerable tact, courtesy and diplomacy in dealing with members of the public, other agencies and staff.
General knowledge of water distribution and waste water collection system operating principles and practices.
Ability to identify possible and probably causes associated with water distribution, waste water and storm sewer collection system problems, blockages and failures.
Knowledge of safety hazards associated with working in and around water distribution and waste water collection systems and appropriate safe work procedures.
Knowledge of safe work procedures, appropriate signage and work site protection when working on travelled road surfaces.
Excellent organization and time management skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
High degree of initiative and sound judgement.
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.

Demonstrated ability to perform all of the duties outlined in a safe manner following established City policies and procedures; WorkSafe BC, Occupational Health and Safety Rules, WHMIS and TDG.

Physical ability and agility to complete duties requiring physical effort in an industrial environment.

Committed to pursuing and attending at on-going training and educational opportunities relevant to the position.

Available and willing to work various schedules; weekends, holidays, day shift, evening shift, night shift as outlined in the Collective Agreement.

Respond to emergency call out and undertake Disaster Service responsibilities as required.

This position is covered under the Collective Agreement between the City of Cranbrook and C.U.P.E. Local 2090 – Cranbrook Inside/Outside Workers.
