Education / Communications Coordinator – Eagle Point Blue Rapids Parks Council – Edmonton, Alberta

The Eagle Point – Blue Rapids Parks Council (Parks Council) is a non-profit, community-based multi-stakeholder organization committed to managing and operating Eagle Point Provincial Park and Blue Rapids Provincial Recreation Area in partnership with Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development – Parks Division. Incorporated in April 2008, under the Alberta Societies Act, the Parks Council currently has a team of four staff and contractors and a volunteer board consisting of fifteen directors, representing a variety of stakeholders including Alberta Parks, local municipalities, outdoor recreation organizations and industry representatives.

The Parks Council is seeking an experienced and proven professional as its Education and Outreach Coordinator to plan, develop and deliver its innovative Environmental Education program as well as its Outreach and Communications Initiatives.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director you will be responsible for the design and delivery of all Parks Council environmental education programs and outreach initiatives, as well as assist with fundraising for the program and the day-to-day operations of the organization.

Duties will include:

Design and deliver environmental education programs through community and schools groups; deliver programming to a variety of audiences including children, youth, adults and industry professionals;
Prepare educational materials for schools, youth and community groups and the public;
Cultivate and manage partnerships with local and regional outdoor and environmental education service providers, connect public schools and local groups/organizations with these service providers and facilitate their programs being offered in Drayton Valley and surrounding area;
Promote, coordinate and execute Parks Council larger programs and special events;
Support Parks Council member organizations in the coordination and promotion of their larger programs and special events;
Implement and refine the Parks Council’s outreach initiatives relating to new and ongoing projects and initiatives;
Update and monitor the Parks Council website and social media forums (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube) to encourage, promote and share activities and events;
Provide fundraising assistance by drafting, editing and preparing grant submissions to funding agencies, municipalities and corporations and by promoting environmental education strategy and program funding opportunities to local industry;
Other related duties as may be required.

Key Experience and Competencies

We are seeking a candidate with:

A bachelor’s degree in education, recreation, or environmental studies, with complimentary education or experience in outreach and communications;
A demonstrated ability to develop, lead and implement a wide spectrum of innovative, experiential education and outreach initiatives;
At least 2 years of practical experience in environmental and/or outdoor education program development and delivery;
Experience working for, and have a high degree of comfort working with, non-profit organizations, volunteer boards and volunteers;
Strong interpersonal skills, strong skills in group facilitation and collaborative planning, and the proven ability to work both independently and in a team environment;
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Outlook);
Demonstrated experience working within social media forums (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube);
A current valid Alberta driver’s license, with a very good driving record;
Valid, current Criminal Record and Child Intervention Record checks;
A willingness and ability to work flexible hours when needed, including some evenings and weekends

Assets

Experience with GIS software;
Familiar with the use of GPS;
Familiar with Photoshop and Adobe suite of programs

Terms of Employment

This is a full-time position (based on a 40-hour work week) and based in Drayton Valley, Alberta. Compensation offered is competitive with established non-profit organizations and will be commensurate with skills, experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
