Position Title: Women’s Counsellor

Status: Full time, permanent

Closing Date: Monday, October 26th, 2015

Position Scope:
The role of the Women’s Counsellor is to provide therapeutic counselling and support to the women who come into the Alice Housing Program in order to facilitate healing and the reclamation of their lives and safety. Using a feminist philosophy, and a trauma informed approach, the Women’s Counsellor must respect the right of women to self-determination and economic and political equality in society, mindful of the need for women and children to experience both security and respect. The general duties of the Women’s Counsellor include, but are not limited to, needs assessment, crisis and support counselling, case management, advocacy and referral and group facilitation.  As an Alice Housing team member, the women’s counsellor is also committed to organizational needs as directed including fundraising, donor development, community awareness and education.

Knowledge and Special Skills Required

In depth knowledge of the issues, concerns, and struggles that are faced by women who have experienced intimate partner violence including the cycle of violence.
Demonstrated flexibility, time management skills, and ability to react competently in any given situation.
Ability to work independently while within the concept of a team approach.
Demonstrated capacity in program development and assessment.
Comprehensive understanding and application of harm reduction principles and anti-oppressive practice.
Proficiency in all standard Microsoft Office applications.
In depth knowledge of community resources available.
Capacity for organizational leadership and direction.

Qualifications Required

A Bachelors Degree or Masters in Social Work, Counselling, or other related field, and/or equivalent combinations of training and experience.
Previous experience in counselling and program delivery for women who have experienced intimate partner violence.
Training in Trauma Informed Practice is an asset.
Registration with a practice governing body.

Compensation commensurate with education and experience.
