Transportation Engineering Technologist
(Competition 15-78)

The City of Nanaimo is seeking a Transportation Engineering Technologist.  Under the general direction of the Manager of Transportation, this position is technical in nature and is responsible for traffic monitoring, technical capacity/safety analysis and the development of geometric concepts and signal timing plans. The Technologist monitors, researches and reports on current conditions (operations, safety, congestion, performance) within the transportation network for all modes of transportation and uses condition information to develop traffic policies and guidelines. Interaction with a wide range of transportation stakeholders is required, including; the general public, development applicants, other City staff, consultants and external agencies; participation in public consultation is also expected. The position will also support larger transportation projects and staff within the Transportation Group.

The successful candidate will have diploma of technology in a relevant field (such as civil engineering, civil engineering design, survey and drafting) as well as specialized training in the traffic/transportation. A minimum of three (3) years’ related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.  Applicants must have membership (or eligible for membership) in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia as an Applied Science Technologist or Certified Technician.  Possession of a valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License is also required.

This is a unionized position, $37.30 per hour – after probation (Jan 2015 rate, subject to job evaluation), based on a 35-hour work week.  A comprehensive benefit package is included.
