Career Opportunity
The City of Salmon Arm is inviting applications for the position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III. The Wastewater Treatment Plant is a Level IV suspended and fixed growth tertiary treatment plant with biological and/or chemical phosphorus removal, UV disinfection, auto-thermophilic aerobic digestion, bio-solids, filtration, chemical odour control and other related appurtenances.

The Operator III is responsible for the daily on-site operation and routine maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility. The operator is also responsible for maximizing the performance of the pollution control facility while minimizing safety and health risks and environmental concerns. This position reports to the Chief Operator/Manager of the Treatment Facility.

The successful candidate will possess the following:

Education and Experience

Wastewater Treatment Certification through the Environmental Operators Certification Program (EOCP) at Level III (level II will be given 6 months to achieve Level III once eligible)
Completion of Water Quality Course at Okanagan University College or equivalent
Two years’ supervisory experience or direct charge of a Wastewater Treatment Level II Facility or higher
Nine hundred instructional hours, or (90) CEU’s, or ninety credits of post secondary education in water or wastewater field, environmental engineering or related studies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, practices and procedures
Fundamental knowledge of sewer collection, pumping systems and hydraulics
Knowledge of instrumentation programming, SCADA and Telemetry
Knowledge of ATAD and BIO-P operations
Knowledge of filtration, ultraviolet disinfection processes and process control
Knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, analysis and testing
Experience in computer applications specifically in spreadsheet and database software
Ability to work independently with limited direction;
Strong interpersonal and communications skills, both verbal and written
Ability to work effectively under pressure and with changing priorities and deadlines.

A sound knowledge of municipal organizations and operations is preferred.
