Assistant Director – Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation – Madden, near Calgary, Alberta

Position: Full-time, 40 hours per week.

The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) seeks an Assistant Director of Wildlife Care to assist with the management of the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned wildlife. This role directly reports to the Director of Wildlife Care and assists with overseeing clinic staff and over 100 active volunteers.

Summary of Duties:

Manage the day-to-day operations of the wildlife hospital, which includes but not limited to: animal examinations, treatment, husbandry, diagnostics, euthanasia, routine lab tests, etc.
Arrange animal rescues, transport, and releases.
Answer and direct phone calls from the public and volunteers.
Assist with developing and implementing policies, procedures, and practices.
Identify appropriate release sites and assist with managing animal releases.
Maintain rehabilitation records and prepare statistics and reports.
Manage, train, and supervise staff, volunteers, interns, and students.
Maintain a positive, healthy, and safe work environment.
Manage inventory and ordering of supplies and equipment.
Housekeeping duties including laundry, dishes, floor cleaning, etc.
Assist with public relations via Open Houses, tours, press, published articles, etc.
Ensure the proper maintenance of facility, equipment, and caging.

Desired Qualifications:

Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g. biology, zoology) and/or Animal Health Technologist diploma.
At least two (2) years experience in a wildlife rehabilitation centre or veterinary hospital.
Experience in a supervisory/management role is an asset.
Ability to work with minimal to no supervision.
Excellent project management and time management skills, and the ability to perform well under pressure.
Excellent verbal, written, and presenting skills.
Completion of IWRC’s Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation 1AB course would be an asset.
Knowledge of Alberta wildlife and natural history.
Valid class 5 driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

Salary/Hours of Work:

Salary: $37,000 per annum.

Schedule: 40 hours per week (most likely working Tuesday-Saturday). Flexible schedule is required, depending on animal care needs.
