Research Manager, Oncology, Cumming School Medicine – University of Calgary – Calgary, AB

Position Overview

The Department of Oncology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Manager. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

This position reports to the Principal Investigator with accountabilities from other co-investigators.  The successful candidate will work in the Molecular Diagnostics of Thyroid Nodule Fine Needle Aspirations area and will be responsible for developing an internationally recognized program of translational molecular diagnostic research in the area of thyroid pathology that is competitive for funding at the provincial and/or national levels. Research undertaken through this position will occur within the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute (SACRI).

Working hours will fall mainly within the standard weekday calendar, but evening and weekend hours may be required based on experimental protocols and certain deadlines. The position is associated with a moderate to high stress level.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

Responsible for all hiring, performance reviews and discipline of immediate laboratory team
Act as a coach & mentor in training and development of junior team members
Resolve conflict within the interdisciplinary team
Oversee and develop both the strategy and the operation of molecular diagnostic research in the area of thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer in the Division of Endocrinology and the SACRI
Obtain necessary ethical and safety approvals to ensure success of the research program
Successfully apply for local, provincial and national research funding to support operation of the laboratory
Manage and oversee both the purchases and the expenses of the laboratory, including monitoring budgets, accounts, and providing financial reports as necessary
Interacting with other University entities, including other individual researchers & their teams, academic departments and administrative departments (such as HR and accounting)
Perform sophisticated technical experiments to achieve the goals of the overall project
Manage the workload of individual team members to maximize productivity of the laboratory
Establish and maintain accurate electronic and paper records regarding laboratory research
Ensure any patient information is being handled appropriately and is kept confidential in accordance with privacy legislation
Assist in writing research proposals for further development of molecular FNA diagnostics
Prepare annual research program reports for the Division of Endocrinology and the SACRI

Qualifications / Requirements:

PhD degree or equivalent in a health-related biochemistry or molecular biology-related field
Minimum of 5 years postdoctoral experience working on molecular and transcriptomic analysis of thyroid samples in a clinical translational research environment and in a basic science laboratory
Minimum of 3 years experience in microRNA profiling of human tissue samples
Strong track record of publication in high impact journals of the field
Strong track record of successful grant funding in the last 5 years
Track record of successful patent application
Experience in writing successful studentship, fellowship and/or research applications is strongly recommended
Experience giving presentations at national and international meetings is required
Demonstrated ability to collaborate within an interdisciplinary team and on a multi-national level is required
Skill and experience in preparing manuscripts for publication
Ability to compile, draft and maintain correspondence, spreadsheets, reports, and presentations
Skill in preparing, analyzing, and monitoring budgets
Ability to develop and manage a budget
