Sustainability Coordinator – Town of Drayton Valley – Drayton Valley, AB

The Sustainability Coordinator is responsible for leading the Municipal Sustainability Team in building upon and implementing the strategies of the Community Sustainability Plan.

Primary Responsibilities:

To conduct research and analysis to identify, develop, and implement innovative programs and policies in support of the Town’€™s sustainability goals.
To work with other team members for long-term program and strategic planning efforts for sustainability programs.
To develop and maintain partnerships with residential groups, business organizations, and local, provincial and federal agencies involved in energy efficiency and sustainability.
To work with all Town Departments and teams to reduce the carbon footprint within Town operations.
To facilitate and coordinate education and outreach efforts related to sustainability measures.
To utilize all available sources of information dissemination to promote sustainability as a best practice in daily life.
To coordinate the implementation of capital and/or operational projects for the Town that achieve the goals of the Sustainability Plan.
To incorporate sustainability principles and practices into the daily operations of all municipal departments.
To prepare plans, reports, memos, and other material to communicate the Sustainability Plan program strategies and results to Council, Committees, and the community.
To maintain a high level of job knowledge and understanding of community needs and issues regarding sustainability policies and programs.
To be the administrative lead for the Town’€™s Municipal Sustainability Committee, and to prepare all documents and meeting materials for the Committee.
To prepare, submit, and monitor grant applications for the purpose of implementing strategies in sustainability.
To prepare, annually, an operating and capital budget for approval by Town Council.
To perform related duties as requested to meet the needs of the Town of Drayton Valley.

Deliverables include, but are not exclusive to:

Creation of promotional campaigns to promote initiatives such as the POUR program, recycling challenges, and carbon footprint awareness.
Review of the recommendations within the Integrated Waste Management Strategy with an aim to develop a strategic plan for the implementation of identified recommendations.
Collaborate on the enhancement of green municipal bylaws and development standards that will ensure the attainment of the Plan’s targets.
Ensure the strategies and goals of the Sustainability Plan are being implemented by the respective departments within the municipality.
Actively engage community organizations and businesses in implementing sustainable practices in their daily operations.

Decision Making Role:

A moderate degree of independence in decision-making is required under the general direction and guidance of the Director of Planning and Development/Infrastructure. Original and independent thinking are required for setting goals and developing plans to achieve said goals.

Impact of errors -€“ Errors can affect other workers or departments within the organization. No serious loss of time or money, however may take time to correct.

Major Inter Personal Contacts:

Works with Management and other departments, clients, representatives of other agencies and others outside of the organization. Responsibility in presenting recommendations and gaining agreement to set goals and long-term strategies. Requires tact to gain positive working relationships.

Non-supervisory role

Qualifications:

Degree (or relevant experience) in Environmental Studies, Community Planning/Management, Education, or related field with a minimum of three years of related professional experience including development and implementation of sustainable strategies, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Proficient in the MS Office Suite of products.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and high level of professionalism.
Organized and able to multi-task and meet tight deadlines.
Valid driver’s license.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Ability to research information, develop recommendations, and prepare concise written reports.

Experience:

Related experience in community sustainability, community engagement and/or the environmental field.
Experience working with volunteer organizations in the public or private sector.
Knowledge and experience in environmental management and technologies and sustainability principles.
